On evolving and growing - even at the age of 62

Karin Pohl is a psychotherapeutic alternative practitioner and artist in Wuppertal and Düsseldorf. She dedicates her life to the joy of painting, dancing, her partnership, being with others, and her personal advancement. With her energy, Karin encourages the people around her to go new and individual ways - during our visit she manages this in a few minutes. With her sense of craftsmanship and aesthetics, Karin speaks directly to us and takes us into her life.

Amidst ivy and old city mansions, the collaborative workshop and photo studio in Wuppertal is easy to miss - a city where dance theater has its roots and people speak freely off the cuff. From midday on, the sun often shines through the windows and brightens the wide spaces. Today it hides behind the cloud cover. Desks stand next to meter-high canvases; in one corner people are painting and in the other taking photographs. When Karin Pohl enters the studio, she immediately feels at ease, is always on the move, and fills the canvas with paint.
The 62-year-old psychotherapist's main occupation is her practice in Wuppertal, where she specializes not only in systemic constellations but also as an NLP coach, neurographics expert, and mediator - her clients now visit her online as well. Thereby, it is not always necessary to speak - much more important is for her to feel the silence. "I go into every appointment empathically, absolutely value-free, and without thoughts. In many conversations, however, I also take something away for myself and grow with each client" - after all, Karin originally used the therapeutic techniques for herself.

The career path can always take new directions

Even as a teenager, she had no desire to swim with the tide and courageously decided not to pursue her original plan to work in corporate administration. Karin learned the profession of masseuse and medical bath attendant and continued to develop in her own practice. In the process, she observed that physical ailments are often accompanied by psychological problems. An injury to her hand, about 20 years ago, then moved Karin to think further : she decided to train as an NLP master, as a non-medical practitioner for psychotherapy, and encountered family constellations for the first time. "This completely changed my perspective and my life within a few years" Karin tells us with fervor.

Finding a balance in everyday work

Then, a few years ago, a tinnitus resulting from a blast trauma prompted Karin once again to change her routines and beliefs. In the abstract paintings on the largest possible canvases, she finds distraction and a balance in her therapeutic work. Today, the artist continuously participates in exhibitions, receives a lot of positive feedback, and sells her paintings more and more often. Karin does not plan the paintings beforehand. She simply fills the blank canvas with colors and shapes, has nothing specific in mind, and gets completely involved in the moment: "I paint, wipe, rub, scrape, and pour paint with my hands until the painting is finished and  doesn't need another brush stroke."

Still discovering new things at 90

When talking to us, Karin has to listen carefully; her tinnitus continues to bother her. To let go, she always starts her day with yoga or meditation. She now organizes her work schedule herself, likes to cook at lunchtime, and sits by the window with her coffee cup for fifteen minutes. The 62-year-old didn't have time for such a lifestyle in the past and appreciates it all the more today. At mealtimes, Karin and her husband often sit together, tell each other about their day and occasionally end the evening with a little dance - most recently, the two have been practicing the slow waltz.

For Karin, it is important to live and work with love and mindfulness. In her marriage, she feels on the same level with her partner; together, the couple looks at what is good for each other - this was not always the case and has only developed over time. At the same time, Karin wants to remain free and flexible and throw herself into new projects well into old age. With this energy, she also inspires the people around her, as we notice in conversation with other artists in the studio. Karin is not yet able to answer the question about her future: "I have visions from time to time, which I then simply let go of to wait for the right moment. Maybe I'll write a book about my tinnitus."

Enough self-criticism - or not after all?

Even though Karin feels she has found her own path, she keeps discovering new forks in the road, stairs, and trails. In the process, she has learned for herself: "We should stop criticizing ourselves or comparing ourselves to others, and instead just be who we are."
